At Christmas, there are pots and baskets of scarlet poinsettias wherever you look, but indoors: poinsettias are tropical, and don't take kindly to being left out in the cold. The banks of white poinsettias planted in Paseo Recoletos, were so lovely at first, but by the start of January, you could see that they had had enough. Everything drooped.

Turn up their collars
And pose for the cameras.
Visiting cousins, pale and despondent
In trenchcoats of inadequate gaberdine
Thrust their hands deep in their pockets
And wish they’d stayed home.
